John Marteneau, London, No. 2965, circa 1775. Very fine and rare 20 ct. gold and enamel pair cased, quarter repeating watch and chatelaine, in the manner of George Michael Moser.

C. Outer double body, the pierced bezels with white and blue chamleve enamelled decoration, the back with a neoclassical allegorical scene painted en grisaille within a maroon enamel surround, border with scrolls over a blue ground (slightly restored). Inner double body, bassine, pierced and engraved with a mask and scrolls of foliage. Matching chatelaine with four panels decorated "en suite", the larger with a scene depicting "Leda and the swan". D. White enamel with Roman numerals and outer Arabic minute ring. Blued steel "poker and beetle" hands. M. Hinged, gilt brass full plate with turned baluster pillars, fusee with chain, verge escapement, plain brass three-arm balance, flat balance spring and gilt brass English cock. Repeating on a bell by depressing the pendant. Signed on the gilt brass dust cap. In good condition. Diam. 47 mm.
