Anonymous, English, circa 1640. Fine and rare 22 ct. gold and enamel pendant watch in the form of a shell, with a specially made movement by H. Fisher, Preston, circa 1780.

C. Double body, in the shape of a shell, cover and back with dark blue, white and red champlevé enamel scalloped sectors with scrolled decoration (slightly restored), plain blue enamel backing. D. Gold, shaped, with Roman numerals and inner ring for hours from 13 to 24, entirely decorated with a fine champlevé translucent enamelled maritime landscape. Single blued steel hand. M. Specially made, shaped, hinged gilt brass full plate, with column pillars, fusee with chain, verge escapement, plain brass three-arm balance, flat balance spring, gilt brass English cock with ruby end-stone. Signed on the back plate. In good condition. Dim. 46 x 33 mm.

Seventeenth century gold and enamel English watches are extremely rare. They were so treasured throughout the XVlllth century, that they have been transformed after the invention of the balance spring, or new movements specially made at the request of their owners, in order to upgrade their precision.
