Blois, circa 1660, movement by Gerrit Knip, No. 157, circa 1770. Fine 18 et gold watch case decorated with fine 17th century enamel panels.

Double body, bassine, the bezel and band engraved with scrolls and flowers, and set with two very fine XVIIth century Blois painted enamel panels, depicting scenes of Venus and Adonis lite history, the enamel backing painted with classical landscapes D. White enamel with Roman numerals and outer Arabic minute ring with arched divisions. Gilt brass Louis XV hands. M. Hinged gilt brass full plate with baluster pillars, fusee with chain, verge escapement, plain steel three-arm balance, flat balance spring and gilt brass Dutch cock. Signed on the dial and back plate. In good condition. Diam. 52 mm.

Enamel XVIIth century watch cases, painted in Blois and Geneva, were of such high quality and so treasured throughout the XVlllth century, that replacement movements were often specially produced to be housed in such cases or the enamel panels themselves, incorporated into XVlllth century watches.
