C. Multi-piece, engine-turned, glazed on three sides, the flat section columns mounted with palmettes. D. White enamel with Roman numerals. Gold Breguet hands. Engine-turned gilt dial-plate with two subsidiary dials for date and days of the week. Gold "serpent" hands. M. Rectangular gilt brass, fusee with chain, platform escapement with spring detent escapement, three-arm compensation balance of Louis Berthoud type with trapezoidal platinum weights, flat balance spring. In very good condition. Dim. 17,5 x 10 x 8 cm., excluding the handle.

French carriage clocks in solid silver and ver)' rare, even more so with fusee and chain and chronometer escapement. This clock can be compared with the best of Breguet's carriage clocks, which is not surprising in view of Oudin's reputation as one of his best workmen. Charles Oudin Charles Oudin pupil of Breguet and one of his best foremen, devised the equation of time to fit the " Montres de souscription". He 'vas established in business on his own behalf in the Palais Royal, Galerie de Pierre from circa 1804 to 1825, and was succeded by his son who transfered the firm to Galerie Montpensier 1830-1840 and subsequently took Detouche into partnership. A. Charpentier was successor to Oudh/ Fils, son of Charles with the signature: " Charles Oudin à Paris, Horloger de L.L. M.M., l'Empereur et l'Impératrice de Russie" .To accompagny the display at the 1862 Exhibition in London, Oudin-Charpentier produced a book entitled : Catalogue of Chief Exhibits b/ Oudin-Charpentier, principal clockmaker to their Majesties The Queen and King of Spain and to the Imperial Navy. Considering the quality of his work, it is surprising that so little is recorded about his life.
