Notes

Nicolas Fortin, died after 1727. Married to Marie- Louise Caron, and Kvas the father of Augustin Ier. He vvas Maître in Paris, and established rue de la Harpe from 1705. As distinct from gilt brass cases which were cast or stamped before being chased, the silver overlay was made from sheet and embossed. The body of the case is of gilt brass, and the work could be carried out both more economically and with grea ter freedom for the choice of subject by the silversmith.
