Jas. Staplin, London, No.536, circa 1785, macle for the Chinese Market. Fine gilt-metal, enamel, pearl and paste-set paircased quarter-striking clockwatch.
C. Outer, double body with pierced and engraved foliage decoration, the bezels set with alternate splitpearls and ruby pastes, the back inset with a panel enamelled with an allegory to unrequited love within navette-shaped border of white pellets, scarlet translucent enamel and 'faux' pearls. Inner, double body, also with pierced and engraved decoration. D. White enamel with Roman numerals and outer Arabic minutes with centre-seconds marks. Gold beetle-and-poker hands (centre-seconds lacking). M. GiIt brass, full plate with turned pillars, fusee and chain, cylinder escapement, plain steel three-arm balance with flat spring (centre-seconds wheel lacking). Pierced and engraved English cock, matching regulator plate. Striking on a bell, Strike/Silent and Stop/Go levers in the bezel.Signed on the backplate. In good condition. Diam. 60mm.
