Anonymous, South German, circa 1610. Very rare and small ebonised fruitwood tabernacle clock with stackfreed.

C. Tabernacle form, on ogee foot with pierced and engraved scroll foot, the centre section with turned columns and scroll sidepieces, the pediment with a shallow niche pierced with a slot for an automated figure (lacking), applied engraved copper (traces of gilding) strips above and below. Back with a hinged iron door painted with a floral design in giIt on a maroon ground, the wooden surround retained by steel clips and retaining the movement, with the bell and hammer mounted above and activated by a cord from the movement. D. Rectangular, foliage engraved and gilt, with Roman hour numerals I - XII, Arabic numerals 13 - 24, and provision for touch studs. Single blued-steel beetle pattern hand. M. Square plates, the front of iron, the back of gilt brass, with plain square pillars, iron wheels throughout with open springs, verge escapement with plain steel balance, griffin's head scroll cock, hog's bristle regulator, steel stackfreed, the cam cover of engraved and gilt brass. Hour-striking with counter-sunk iron countwheel. In good condition. Dims. 34cm. x 20cm.
