Ilbery, London, No. 6116, made for the Chinese market, circa 1790. Important and very fine gold, enamel and hardstone center-seconds watch, with special escapement.

Octagonal, polished frame, inset with 31 panels of cornelian and mass agate, back centered with a large panel of mass agate within split-pearl border, scarlet white and blue champleve enamelled pendant, bow and button finial. D. White enamel with Roman numerals, minute marks. Gold Breguet "pointes évidées" hands with counterpoised center seconds. M 18-, gilt brass, fully engraved, Lepine caliber, free standing barrel with stop-work. Duplex escapement, plain polished steel five armed balance, flat balance spring and diamond endstone. Signed on the movement. In very good condition. Dim; 110 x 65mm.

Notes

A similar watch, by the same maker, bearing No. 6117, was sold by Antiquorum in Tokyo on December 16, 1990, lot No. 419. Several slightly different forms of this watch exist, always with movements by Ilbery. The cases my be of rhomboid, hexagonal or oval in shape, always in cornelian agate with a mass agate back.
