Two putti painted in grisaille over a blue enamel ground on the inside of the soundboard, with applied diamond-set crescent and a star, arched stem and neck terminating in a snake's head, the back with a pattern radiating out from the centre, in green and red enamel. D. White enamel, Roman chapters, outer minute ring. Blued-steel Breguet hands. M. 24 mm o, hinged, gilt brass full plate, verge escapement, plain brass three-arm balance, continental cock, rack and pinion regulator with a silverlate.Dim. 70 x 30 mm. Notes

Jean Rousseau, (1580-1642).Master watchmaker who specialised in cruciform watches and in rock crystal watches in the shape of animals. He had seven sons and five daughters, among them Jean le Jeune (1606-1684), a Master watchmaker, David and Jacques, watchmakers, Daniel, a goldsmith, Noé, an engraver, and Loys, a lapidary. He taught several apprentices, one of them was Jean Clairat in 1638. There is a cross watch by him in the British Museum, and a rock crystal watch with scalloped edges and a very similar movement in theMetropolitan Museum of New York.Rock crystal watches were quite popular, in Geneva and elsewhere, during the first half of the seventeenth century.'Dictionnaire des Horlogers Genevois', Osvaldo Patrizzi, Antiquorum Editions, Geneva, 1998.
