Two-body, 'fermée' type, oval, domed back engraved with an allegorical figure of Justice, hinged front cover engraved with a figure of Peace, fluted band engraved with a stylised laurel leaf pattern. D. Oval, gilt metal, Roman hour chapters hour chapter ring with inner half-hour marks, touch pins for night reading, engraved with a cherub resting his elbow on a skull and an hour-glass on the table behind, in a solemn reminder that our lives are passing away with the hours which may have been aapted from an illustrated 'ars moriendi' book-block. Blued-steel 'arrow' hands. M. Oval, 36 x 46 mm, gilt brass full plate, turned baluster pillars, fusee and gut line, short four-wheel train with five-leaf pinions, verge escapement, three-arm steel circular balance, blued-steel balance spring, elongated pinned cock pierced and engraved with asymmetrical floral decoration, wheel and click set-up.Signed on the back plate.Dim. 67 x 42 mm. Nicholas Vallinwas born around 1565 in Brussels, came to London, married a Dutch girl in 1590, lived and worked in Blackfriars, and died in 1603. He is one of the earliest recorded English watchmakers.
