C. Three-body, 'Directoire', polished back, fluted band, with alternating polished and chased sections, hinged gilt metal cuvette. D. Three vari-coloured gold musicians in a painted enamel interior, with a lady conducting, one gentleman playing the violin, and the other a cello. Small, eccentric white enamel dial set at the top with Arabic numerals, outer minute divisions and 15-minute Arabic numerals. Gold 'spearhead' hands. M. 49.5 mm o gilt brass full plate, cylindrical pillars, fusee and chan for the going train, verge escapement, plain three-arm brass balance, continental cock pierced and engraved in symmetrical leaf decoration, the musical movement driven by a pinned barrel playing on eight blued-steel tuned teeth, six-wheel train, the extension of the arbor of the second wheel carries the automaton cam that drives the players' arms.Movement ring scratched on outside 'Isàc Del Piguet, à Geneve 34'.Diam. 56 mm. This is a very early example of a musical automaton watch, made only a few years after the invention by Antoine Favre-Salomon of tuned steel teeth in replacement of the carillon bell, the invention of which he presented in 1796 to the Société des Arts in the form of a tabatière playing two tunes, and which was commercialised around 1800-1802.Piguet Isàc DanielFor a biography, see page 224.
