Three-body, 'fermée' type, both hinged covers with small central cross and deep broad facets, the front engraved with the crucifixion, a dove above and a lamb below, two Evangelists flanking the cross and two angels in the top corners of the transom, the back engraved with the beatification of the Virgin Mary flanked by two Evangelists, the band engraved with foliate scrolls, angels, and animals, tulip pendant, loose ring, small finial.D. Silver, cruciform, engraved with instruments of the Passion and the Resurrection of Christ, a village scene in the centre, applied gilt chapter ring with radial Roman chapters. Engraved gilt 'fleur de lis' hand. M. 38 x 29 mm, cruciform, gilt brass full plate, fusee and gut line for the going train, verge escapement, two-arm iron circular foliot, short gilt pinned cock, pierced and engraved with asymmetrical foliage, wheel and click set-up covered with a cock with large, elaborate, pierced anengraved foot.Signed on the back plate Combret A Lyon.Dim. 61 x 34 mm. Notes

Pierre Combret II à Lyon (working in Lyon from 1581 to 1622).The son of Pierre, born in Egleton, died in Lyon on 25 December 1622, married to Anne Cochaud with whom he had thirteen children between 1594 and 1622. One of the leading French watchmakers of the time, his clocks and watches can be found in numerous museums. He made oval, octagonal, and cruciform watches and also produced pendant watches designed as shellfish or tulips.
