The Cockle-shellFrères Bordier, Geneva, No. 67896, circa 1810.Fine 18 ct. gold and enamel form watch with concealed dial, designed as a cockle-shell.

C. Two-body, 'fermée' type, shell-shaped, spring-loaded front cover reveals the dial, both sides similarly decorated with blue, red, black and yellow champlevé enamel. D. White enamel, Breguet numerals, outer minute divisions. Gold 'spearhead' hands. M. 20 mm o, hinged, gilt brass full plate with cylindrical pillars, fusee and chain, cylinder escapement, plain three-arm brass balance, continental cock pierced and engraved with letters 'JB' for J. Bordier, rack and pinion regulator with a silverlate.Signed on dial and movement, initials on cock.Dim. 43 x 31 mm. Published in the Sandberg book, page 424-425.

Notes

Les frères Bordierare known to have been associated since 1787. In 1815 they are recorded as being at Grand Mezel. They made pair-cased, repeating watches and form watches, decorated with enamel and precious and semi-precious stones.
