Carl Schmidt, German, circa 1585.Very fine and extremely rare, large gilt metal single-hand, hour striking two-train coach watch with concealed dial.
C. Two-body, 'fermée' type, 'bassine' with curved-in edge, the front lid pierced with lunettes for the numerals, the centre with a rosette, which is also engraved on the inside, the band with typical Renaissance scrolling patterns, the back pierced with scrolls, flowers and two birds, unusual pendant with only the top part swivelled, and loose ring. D. Gilded, 12 tactile knobs for night reading, Roman chapters and half-hour divisions, centre engraved with flowers and leaves, outside the chaptering engraved with a laurel wreath, small aperture for setting the striking at 10 o'clock. Blued-steel 'arrow' hand. M. 57.8 mm o, gilt brass full plate, round baluster pillars, fusee and gut line, five-wheel gilt brass train, verge escapement, steel foliot, S-shaped cock secured with a screw, striking five-wheel train, fixed engraved barrel, steel count wheel, set on the back plate, striking on a bell fixed to the back of the case.Signed on the back plate within a ribbon cartouche, a rare feature for the period.Diam. 78 mm.
