Unsigned, English, early 19th. century. Amusing and fine gilt-bronze table clock with calendar, and erotic miniatures concealed in the base, made for the Chinese Market.

C. Designed as a finely chased cast and gilt lion standing on a chequered base with acanthus skirt and green marbIe plinth with inverted bun feet; the lion's back with a saddle-cloth supporting the circular clock case, with acanthus finial and multi-coloured paste-set silver bezel; hinged and glazed back and front doors. Interior of the base set with two miniatures framed under glass and finely painted on ivory with a recenng nude and a cherub receiving a little training for the future. D. White enamel, subsidiary rings for Roman hour chapters, weekday, date and month, with concentric minutes and centre-seconds(invisible repair). Gold and blued-steel hands. M. Large watch caliber, gilt full-plate with turned pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement, plain balance and flat balance spring. Large pierced and engraved cock with diamond end-stone. In very good condition. Dims. 340 x 190 x 155 mm.

To open the base and reveal the miniatures it is necessary to gently pull the lion backwards which releases the hidden spring clips.
