Anonymous, Swiss, circa 1865. Important 18 ct. gold and enamel huntingcased keyless commemorative watch with special escapement, portraits of Napoléon III, Eugénie Montijo and Napoléon 1.

C. Four body massive, "bassine et filets" entirely chased with oak leaf and floral foliage, the cover with half-length oval enamel portrait of Napoléon III with engraved phrase:" Libérateur de l'Univers", back with similar portrait of his wife Eugénie Montijo (slight scratches to surface glaze). Gold cuvette with high relief taille-douce portrait of Napoléon lst, as Emperor within laurel wreath and matted border. D.White enamel with Roman numerals and sunk subsidiary seconds. Fancy blued-steel hands. M. 18"' , frosted and gilt, bar caliber, 17 jewels, pivoted detent escapement, gold 'scape wheel, cut bimetallic balance, blued-steel balance spring with terminal curve. In good condition. Diam. 48 mm.

Notes

The escapement is based on the design introduced by Louis Berthoud in 1785. The detent is pivoted but instead of using a spiral spring to provide the tension, it is maintained by a straight spring screwed to the plate. The counterpoisec. tail banks against an adjustable gold pin.
