Anonymous, French. Circa 1790. Fine and rare long-duration "Directoire" skeleton clock, with remontoire operated hour and half-hour striking train.
Ebonised wood base with glass dome. Cast and gilt one-piece bombé frame on oval black marbIe base inset with an engine-turned gilt panel and standing on four tumed feet. White enamel chapter-ring with embossed floral bezel. Arabic hour chapters and outer minute ring. Blued-steel Breguet hands. Brass parallel bar movement frame with going barrel attached to the great wheel. Five wheel train with single arm pin-wheel escapement running approximately three months. Remontoire operated halfhour striking train driven from the intermediate wheel with pierced locking plate and three-arm fly. Striking on a bell mounted beneath the frame. In very good condition. Dim. 42 cm. high excluding base and dome.
