Unsigned, French, circa 1670.Rare gilt metal single hand small hour-striking horizontal table clock.

C. Square with oval windows on each side, extended moldings on top and bottom, dolphin-head feet, hinged and florally engraved base panel with aperture for bell. D. Silver applied ring with Roman hour chapter and outer 12-minute divisions, set on florally engraved gilt brass dial plate. Single blued steel "fleur de lis" hand. M. Square,56 x 56 mm, brass full plate with square columns, fusee and chain, verge escapement, now with plain three-arm balance and flat balance-spring, trefoil balance cock secured by a screw, pierced and engraved with wild strawberries, fixed barrel for striking, count wheel on the back plate, striking by a single hammer on a bell set in the case base. Dim. 8 x 8 cm.

Notes

The letters "JW" are engraved on the movement, and below, in a different hand "OP 1798". This is probably the date at which the clock was fitted with balance and balance-spring in place of the old foliot, and a new dial.
