Denis Bordier, Genève, circa 1660.Very fine silver oval pre balance-spring watch.

C. Oval, double-body, fully chased with flowers and foliage, the lid with a cherub leaning against a shield, the back centered with a small landscape. Chased finial and loose ring pendant. D. Gilt brass chapter ring engraved with Roman numerals and half-hour divisions applied on the hinged silver plate held in place by four pins and entirely engraved with scrolling foliage. Gilt brass single hand. M. Oval gilt brass, the back plate engraved with flowers and foliage, elaborated pierced and engravd gilt brass pillars, short three-wheel train, verge escapement, plain steel two-arm balance without spring, irregular gilt brass pierced and florally engraved balance cock secured by a pin, ratchet wheel set up with matching decoration.Signed on the back plate.Dim. 47 x 53 mm.

It is very rare to find an original watch from the middle of the seventeenth century in such perfect condition.Denis Bordier, (1629-1708),the son of Jacques I, was a master watchmaker who is known to have made form watches and rock crystal watches. He was associated with his brother Isaac from 1653 to 1665.
