Notes

Carlos I, King of Portugal (1863-1908)

the son of King Luis and Princess Maria Pia of Savoy, he became king on October 19, 1889. An intelligent but vastly extravagant man, Carlos's policies, wastefulness and extramarital affairs discredited the Portuguese monarchy. On February 1, 1908, the royal family was the victim of an assassination plot. Shots were fired from the crowd by at least two men. The king died immediately, his heir Luís Filipe was mortally wounded, and Prince Manuel was hit in the arm. Several days later Manuel was acclaimed king of Portugal.
