Tilda Swinton photographed by Mary McCartney
Tilda Swinton, Actress
A visually striking and enigmatic actress, Tilda Swinton plays the White Witch in the
first ?Chronicles of Narnia?, the highly successful Walt Disney movie released in
December 2005. Born into an aristocratic Scottish military family, she was educated
in an English boarding school that also housed a cer tain Lady Diana Spencer.
She studied at Cambridge University, but subsequently switched to theatre and
became a student of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Endowed with a taste for the
unique and the bizarre, she found some genuinely interesting gender-bending roles
coming her way. She won the Venise Film Festival award for ?Edward II? (1991),
enjoyed a major triumph as the title character in ?Orlando? (1993) and played
recently in ?Broken Flowers? by Jim Jarmusch in 2005. She has also spent two years
in South Africa and Kenya as a voluntary worker in children?s schools.
Mary McCartney, Photographer
As the eldest child of Paul and Linda McCartney, Mary McCartney?s interest
in photography inevitably began during her childhood, when her mother,
a photographer, never went anywhere without her camera on her shoulder.
Mary later started taking photographs professionally, specialising in portrait
and fashion photography. Portrait subjects have spanned musicians from
Blondie to Wyclef, artists from Peter Blake to Sam Taylor Wood and actors/
actresses such as Ralph Fiennes, Jude Law and Helen Mirren. Her fashion
stories have been published in the New York Time Magazine, Harpers,
V Magazine and Russian Vogue. Recent commissions include shooting for the
Gucci Group, the Stella McCartney advertising campaigns and Adidas. Mary
McCartney had her first solo exhibition in October 2004 entitled ?Off Pointe?, a
series of portraits of the Royal Opera House Ballet Corps out of hours. She is also
working on a personal collection of images under the title ?Keep Faith?, exploring
and documenting the legions of dedicated fans, from a variety of musical currents,
that keep music alive.
The lot consists of 3 photographs and a TAG Heuer ladies? watch issued in a limited numbered edition, signed by Uma Thurman and by UNIFEM.
