Anonymous, Swiss, circa 1780. Unusual 18-carat gold and enamel "night and day" watch.
Double body case with a chased bezel, the back with a translucent brown enamelled ring over engine turning, a garland of small enamelled flowers and further decoration, the winding hole with a shutter. White enamel chapter ring with Roman numerals for the 24 hours and outer Arabic minute ring (hair cracks), semi-circular aperture at the center for the night and day volvelle, enamelled with a painted representation of the sun and the moon, semi-circular gold plate engraved: "Le jour La nuit". Gold "poker and beetle" hands. Gilt brass full plate movement with conical pillars, fusee and chain, cylinder escapement with a plain brass three armed balance, a continental cock and a garnet endstone. In good condition.
