Anonymous, South Germany, circa 1620. Very fine and rare gilt bronze and blacked wood automaton table clock in the form of a standing lion.

The gilt bronze lion is standing on his hind legs with a paw resting on a shield. His eyes roll with the movement of the clock and when it strikes he sticks out his tongue. Octogonal blacked wood base glazed on the front and the back. Set on the gilt bronze shield, the dial is of silver with Roman numerals and inner Arabic ring. Later gilt brass arrow single hand. Shaped full plate double train movement with square steel pillars, fusee and gut line, verge escapement with a balance wheel foliot driving the rolling eyes. Striking train with a gilt brass fixed barrel, a small dial upon the base for the quarter striking indication, the hammer driving the movement of the lion's mouth. In good condition, the crown on the lion's head is a replacement. Dim.: 37x26x17 cm.
