YANGTZE RIVER STEAMBOAT FIRE CLOCK 546 Chinese. Made circa 1840. Fine, extremely rare and unusual, black and gilt-lacquered wood, fire clock in the form of a steamboat.

C. Boat-form, gessoed wood decorated with black and gold lacquer, the prow with carved fi gurehead, lead-lined trough with copper wire supports for the incense stick, lidded compartment to the rear, fi re compartment with cover with two metal funnels, rotating brass paddles and two wheels. Dim. 53 x 11 x 19.5 cm.

This Chinese fi re clock is extremely unusual and perhaps unique in boat-form. It is modeled on the Yangtze river steamers brought to China by Europeans that plied the river for over 150 years from about 1835.
