GOLAY FILS & STAHL ?KING OF PORTUGAL? Golay Fils & Stahl, Geneve, No. 30686. Made for presentation by King Carlos I of Portugal, circa 1900. Fine and rare, thin, 14K gold and enamel, hunting cased, keyless pocket watch decorated with the cipher of King Carlos I.

C. Four-body, "bassine", polished, the front cover decorated with the cipher of King Carlos I in translucent Royal blue champlevé enamel below the Portugese crown decorated with black and red enamel. Hinged gilt metal cuvette. D. White enamel with Arabic numerals, outer minute divisions, subsidiary seconds. Pierced gold "scroll" hands. M. 16''', frosted gilt, 17 jewels, straight-line lever escapement, cut-bimetallic compensation balance, blued steel Breguet balance spring, index regulator. Cuvette signed. Diam. 49 mm.

Carlos I, King of Portugal (1863-1908) the son of King Luis and Princess Maria Pia of Savoy, he became king on October 19, 1889. On February 1, 1908, the royal family was the victim of an assassination plot. Shots were fi red from the crowd by at least two men. The king died immediately, his heir Luís Filipe was mortally wounded, and Prince Manuel was hit in the arm. Several days later Manuel was acclaimed king of Portugal.
