Hamilton Watch Co, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA, No. 8765, sold to the Hydrographic Service of the French Marine, made in 1941. Very fine mahogany two-day marine chronometer with winding indicator.
C. Three-body, with brass handles, all the edges and corners protected by heavy brass inlay, the glazed upper section with hinged lid locked by a catch. Brass bowl and gimbaled suspension, ratchet key in its socket in back right corner. D. Silvered with upright Arabic numerals, outer minute ring, subsidiary seconds and up-and-down scale. Blackened steel "spade" hands. M. Nickel, ?fausses-côtes? decoration, full plate with baluster pillars secured by screws, 13 jewels, fusee with chain and maintaining power, spring detent escapement, two-arm patented ovalizing Volet balance with Invar arm and steel rim, free-sprung Elinvar Extra polished helical balance spring with terminal curves. Signed on dial, movement and box. Dim. Bowl 113 mm., box 19 x 19 x 19 cm. For a note concerning the Volet balance, see the previous lot.
