C. Three-body, mahogany, with external brass handles, glazed upper section, brass bowl in gimbaled suspension, ratchet key in its bracket in the back. D. Frosted and silvered with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds and 49-hour up-and-down sector. Gilt ?spade? hands. M. 76 mm., frosted gilt brass full plate with recess for the mainspring barrel, cylindrical pillars, secured by screws, 11 jewels, reversible fusee and chain, Earnshaw spring-detent escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance with free-sprung helical balance spring with terminal curves, two cylindrical temperature adjustment weights, two mean time adjustment nuts. Signed on dial and the box. Dim. Height 18 cm., width and depth 16 cm.

Onésime Dumas (1824-1889) A chronometer-maker and nephew of Henri Motel, he was an apprentice first of Perrelet and then of Charles-Auguste Berthoud. After having worked for a short period with Motel, he succeeded Gannery at St. Nicolas d?Aliermont. He exhibited precision horology at Rouen in 1856 and chronometers at Paris in 1857. He was the first maker in France to produce chronometers of English caliber.
