Notes

In the early 17th century small watches were very rare. Very few have survived, and very rarely in such perfect condition. The superior condition of this one can be attributed to the fact that it was treasured by a number of eminent collectors. The importance of this watch is such that it was chosen to exemplify early German watchmaking at the International Art Treasure Exhibition held in London in 1962, under the No. 401, illustrated in the catalogue, pl. 228. Chrisstof Streibel became independent in Augsburg on February 27, 1608, and died in 1628. His work, mostly consisting of clocks, can be found in several major museums. Provenance: Elson Collection, Comte de Reisel Collection, then from 1949 in Courtenay Ilbert Collection, sold with the latter?s estate on October 28, 1963, lot 64.
