J(osias) Barbette, (Copenhagen), pinxit Ao: 1692. Extremely fine painted on enamel miniature, possibly a portrait of Prince Frederick of Denmark, set in an 18K gold, tortoiseshell and enamel snuff box circa 1840.

Rectangular with round corners, hinged front cover, center of the lid set with a superbly painted oval enamel miniature representing the portrait of a young noble gentleman, oval gold triple-stepped floral and foliate and geometrically engraved bezel, the tortoiseshell panels framed in gold engraved with a repeated pattern, the front of the box also decorated with an engraved foliate pattern. Signed and dated on the reverse of the enamel. Dim. 91 x 65 x 25 mm.
