Spinning Star Marcks & Co. Bombay & Poona, made by Tardy et Fils, Geneva, circa 1880. Very fine, rare and amusing, diamond-set, 18K gold, silver, enamel and natural pearl animated brooch.
C. Designed in the Renaissance style, center with a seven-arm diamond-set star centered by a good-sized diamond encircled by small diamond-set double stars which, when put in motion, seem to drive the larger star, against a dark blue translucent enamel ground over fine flinqué, cylindrical gold housing encircled with rich diamond-set garlands, top with diamond-set sea shell with a pearl inside, surmounted by hinged diamond-set fleur de lis finial, at the bottom loose diamond-set tassel terminated with a pearl, hinged gold pin at the back, gold activating slide. M. 27 mm., brass full plate, going barrel, long train, anchor governor, allowing a long duration of movement. Dim. 43 x 80 mm.
