M. 45 mm., gilt brass full plate, cylindrical pillars, fusee with Harrison?s maintaining power and chain, Earnshaw-type spring detent chronometer escapement, Earnshaw-type bimetallic compensation balance with quarter cuts, two mean screws and with Hatton temperature-compensating slides with micrometric adjustment screws, free-sprung polished steel helical balance spring with terminal curves, jeweled train, rollers and locking, single-footed cock with diamond endstone. Signed on the movement. Diam. 59 mm.

James Hatton (circa 1740 ? 1815) was an eminent British horologist, making very fine watches and chronometers, as well as clocks. In 1773 he published his ?Introduction to Clock and Watchwork?. He experimented extensively, in search of the most proper gearing, found an interesting formula for meshing epicycloidal teeth, and became Chronometer maker to the East India Company.
