The First Lesson Freres Equivillon & Dechoudens, no. 78389, circa 1815. Very fine and rare 18K gold and painted on enamel pearl-set quarter-repeating watch, striking on a bell and with ?à toc? option.
C. Two-body, scalloped edge, back finely painted on enamel with a mother giving her son the first lesson in reading by showing him letters on a piece of paper, an allegory of motherly love and concern for her children, champlevé azure frame with dove and floral gold design, pearl-set bezels, champlevé band in azure, white and green enamel forming geometrical pattern. D. White enamel, Breguet numerals, outer minute divisions, winding aperture at 2 o?clock. Blued steel ?pierced ogival? hands. M. 34 mm., hinged, gilt brass full-plate with cylindrical pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement, plain brass tree-arm balance, flat balance spring, continental cock pierced and engraved froming letters ?OJ&LR?, repeating on bell by depressing the pendant, lever swiching for dumb repeating at 6 o?clock Signed on dial and movement, case punched ?J·R?. Diam. 47 mm.
