BLACK, STARR & FROST - THE CLASSICAL GARDEN Black, Starr & Frost, France, the marquetry inlay by Vladimir Makovsky (1884-1966), the gold hands by Pierre Gravoin. Made circa 1925. Very fine and very rare, Art Deco, triptych-form, 8-day going, keyless, burr elm, zebrano wood, mother-of-pearl, abalone shell and turkey stone desk clock with concealed dial. Accompanied by a burr elm cigarette box.

Rectangular triptych form, burr elm, two doors with wooden hinges, the fronts and interiors fi nely inlaid in silhouette and with varicolored woods with vignettes of classical garden views, hinged burr elm back door, stepped top with lobed turkey stone fi nial winding crown, square turkey stone supports on stepped burr elm and zebrano wood fl at base. D. Rectangular with radial Arabic numerals on leaf-shaped mother of pearl reserves, abalone shell leaves between, burr elm outer border, the center inlaid with marquetry with a tree in silhouette with a landscape and statue beyond. Yellow gold serpentine hands by Pierre Gravoin. M. 40 mm., rhodium plated with mainspring mounted on the backplate, 6 jewels, straight-line lever escapement, bimetallic compensation balance with 3 adjustments, Breguet balance spring, index regulator. Movement housing signed Black, Starr & Frost, France, case and dial signed ?France?, hands signed PG for Pierre Gravoin. Dim. 11 x 8 x 5.5 cm.

fi ne and very rare example of miniature marquetry by Vladimir Makovsky who specialized in marquetry and lacquer work and also worked for Cartier. The hands were made by the goldsmith and designer Pierre Gravoin. Makovsky and Gravoin collaborated several times making exquisite clocks for Black, Starr & Frost.
