AUGUSTE COURVOISIER, PORTRAIT OF ABD-UL-MEJID, SULTAN OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE Auguste Courvoisier & Co. (La Chaux-de-Fonds), No. 47780. Made circa 1850. Very fine and very rare, 18K gold and painted on enamel hunting cased pocket watch with dual calendar indiction.

Four-body, foliate engraved, the front cover with a very fi nely painted on enamel portrait of Sultan Abd-ul-Mejid (1823-1861) against a sky background, green, red and white champlevé enamel border, the back cover decorated with a fi nely painted on enamel view of Constantinople from the Bosphorus within a border to match the front. Hinged gold cuvette. D. White enamel with radial Islamic numerals, outer minute track, subsidiary dials for seconds and day and date calendar with Islamic characters. Black Breguet hands. M. 40 mm., matte gilt, bar caliber, lateral lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, fl at balance spring, index regulator. Cuvette signed. Diam. 47 mm.
