Notes

Provenance: Earl Amherst This is a superb example of an early Blois enamel watch in ex-cellent condition. At the end of the 18th century the watch was converted from foliot to balance spring and a special protective case was made. Auguste Bretonneau is mentioned as having been a master in the Paris Guild between 1638 and 1643. A watch made by him, with a similar enamel case, is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Isaac Gribelin was a son of master watchmaker Simon Gribelin of Blois, and became master himself before 1634. He was either an associate or a pupil of Jean Toutin, the inventor of the Blois school of enamel (see note to lot No. 141). Literature: Archeological Journal vol. XVII 3
