Probably French or Swiss, circa 1750.Fine and very rare steel and brass wheel slotting engine.

Steel frame and bed, vertical fixed brass dividing plate with divisions on both sides, division locking pin mounted on the turn and revolving with the work, pivoted slotting frame with a pulley outside the frame, steel adjustable depth stop lever. On two later brass feet and later wooden base.Punched with illegible maker's mark on depth control bracket.Dim. Length 26 cm., width 16 cm., height 23 cm.Good condition.

A rare tool. The wheel and pinion cutting was first done with slotting saws, then either the profiled cutter, or an earlier, special file, was used.
