Hope Nursing Love Mudge and Dutton, London, No. 765, enamel signed by George Michael Moser after Sir Joshua Reynolds, circa 1768-1770.Highly important and previously unrecorded 22K gold and painted on enamel quarter-repeating pair-cased watch striking on a bell or à toc.

Outer: two-body, the back painted on enamel depicting "Hope Nursing Love" after Sir Joshua Reynolds, unusual translucent dark blue counter enamel, bezels with translucent dark blue enamel with intertwined gold wavy pattern, four small repousé cartouches. Inner: two-body, "bassine", the band pierced and engraved with foliage, dolphins' heads and a mask, gilt dust cap. D. White enamel on gold, radial Roman chapters, outer dot minute ring with five-minute Arabic numerals. Elaborately pierced andengraved gold hands. M. 34 mm., hinged gilt brass full plate with round baluster pillars, fusee and chain, cylinder escapement, brass escape wheel, plain steel three-arm jeweled balance, diamond endstone, single-footed pierced and engraved cock, silver regulator disc, worm and wheel set-up, Stogden repeating system of the highest quality and finish.Signed on the movement and the dust cap, enamel signed "GMM", case incused "PM" (probably Peter Mournier.Diam. 52 mm.

Notes

The importance of Moser's work cannot be overemphasized. His enamels rank among the very best of all British enamel work. Only about 20 have survived, among which approximately half have no movements or are badly damaged. In this context the superb condition of this watch makes it all the more exceptional.
