Notes

Santa Fe Railroad, former U.S. railroad, was chartered in 1863 as the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad. It opened to traffic in 1864. As construction continued, by 1880 the company reached Santa Fe, New Mexico. The following year the railroad connected with the Southern Pacific Railroad. The Santa Fe Railroad acquired several small lines, and construction continued. By the early 1890's with its 9,000 miles (14,480 km) of track and connections to Chicago and Los Angeles, it was one of theorld's longest railroad systems.
