C.Arched, walnut veneered, molded base, four molded brass feet, handle at the top. D. White enamel, radial Roman numerals, outer minute track with five-minute Arabic markers, winding aperture at 6 o'clock. Blued steel skeletonized Breguet hands. M. Arched, brass, column pillars, fusee with Harrison's maintaining power, and chain, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement, large four-arm brass balance with four peripheral mean screws, freesprung blued steel helical balance spring with terminal curvs.Dim. Height 36 cm., width 27 cm.

Thomas Reid (1762 - 1823)Was a practicing watchmaker as well as the author of one of the most popular and best written horological works of the period, "Treatise on Clock- and Watchmaking", which was published in 1826. He took over the business of his master James Cowan. In 1806 he moved to larger premises and took as partner William Auld. Reid's clocks won national acclaim, in particular his astronomical clock made for Lord Grey's private observatory at Kinfauns. The present clock, made in the early years of his careerclearly show his horological capability and justify the fame he achieved.
