Notes

Silver hump back style carriage clocks were introduced by Breguet circa 1813. Very few were made, and they are among the best clocks, and the most costly, ever produced by Breguet. Among all Breguet carriage clocks his humpback model seems to be immortal. Its shape has continued to be used by the house of Breguet, as well as by others such as Cole and Jump in England, two hundred years after its creation. In 1909, contemporary to the present clock, Breguet sold one to Empress Maria Fedorovna (see Antiquorum, Oct 20, 2002, lot No. 150), and another to Grand Duc Alexis of Russia for 3'000 (Antiquorum, Dec 5, 2002, lot 351).In the early 20th century, a very few carriage clocks of this type were made at the request of important clients, the most complicated one being the one completed for Ettore Bugatti in 1931 as a replica of the most elaborated clock made in the early 19th century. In England toward the end of the 19th century, James Jump made a few silver carriage clocks in the hump-back style, which are today among the most sought-after by collectors, along with those of Breguet.
