Cushion-shaped watch German, circa 1590, maker's mark PB, possibly Paulus Braun, Augsburg. Fine and rare gilt metal, hour striking, single-hand three-train clock watch with concealed dial, alarm, stackfreed, foliot and hog's bristle regulator.
C. Double-body, tambour-like but with cushioned band and slightly domed covers, the front lid pierced with 24 heart-shaped openings for the hours, the center pierced and engraved with a rosette, the band and the back decorated with arabesques typical for the period, flower blossoms and foliage, short pendant and loose ring. D. Gilt metal, hinged to the case, outer chapter with twelve Roman chapters divided for quarters with Arabic numerals, inner ring with 13 to 24 hour Arabic numerals in the Grman style, innermost revolving ring for the alarm. Blued-steel hand. M. 47.2 mm., gilt brass full plate with five pillars, C-shaped stackfreed and going barrel, five-wheel brass train, verge escapement, steel foliot, hog's bristle mounted on a pivoted adjustable lever, small gilt S-shaped cock, striking train driven by a fxed barrel with five-wheel brass train, count wheel on the back plate, alarm driven by a fixed barrel with four-wheel train, the bell mounted to the bottom of the case.Stamped 'PB' either side of a town's mark on the movement.Diam. 65 mm.Published in the Sandberg book, page 36-37.
