Views of Lake Como, the Borromeo Islands and the Vallée du Simplon Geneva, 1840s, enamel attributed to Louis Dufaux père, made for the Italian market. Exceptional and very rare 18K gold, enamel and mother-of-pearl Neo-Gothic paperweight with scent compartment, set with graduated pearls, rubies, turquoises and emeralds.

In the form of a Neo-Gothic triptych, very richly decorated with repoussé, champlevé and cloisonné enamel, embellished with scrolling and stylized foliage over a mother-of-pearl ground, centered by a scent compartment surmounted by three painted on enamel winged cherub's masks, side panels painted on enamel with scenes of Lake Como, the Borromeo Islands and the Vallée du Simplon, rounded corners with painted on enamel flower bouquets, winged cherub's mask painted on enamel at the base. Lavishly decorated hinged handle terminated with a royal crown set with graduated pearls, rubies, emeralds and turquoises.Dim. 145 x 113 mm, height 120 mm.

Notes

The two missing cartouches on either side, perhaps bearing the family crest, were most likely removed to insure anonimity. They were likely the crests of both families, which might indicate that the desk set was given as a wedding present.
