Notes

For a similar, but simpler suite, see Van Cleef & Arpels, Rizzoli International Publications, Inc., by Sylvie Raulet, page 216.The term tulle refers to the city in France which was responsible for first producing this intricate, labor intensive work of fine netting, referring to fine silks and luxurious fabrics. This work is what exemplifies the suite above - the delicate gold mesh that gently curves and folds as if it were silk, each flower slightly different from the next. The balance and harmony of these pieces can not be imitated. Lot #450 is an outstanding example of the artistry, fantasy and skill of the period, ad particularly the house of Van Cleef & Arpels. The rarity of these pieces, combined with the size of the clusters and the numerous florets of this particular example make this extraordinary suite a prize for the connoisseur.
