Gloria Estefan
There' s no growth without a lot of hard work and a little risk," says Gloria Estefan. It's important to
me that I continue to grow. There's no point in living life any other way. " From such pure pop hits as "1-2-
3 " and "Anything For You" to the Grammy Award-winning Latin music adventures "Mi Tierra" and
"Abriendo Puertas", change has been one of the few constants in the superstar singer's remarkable career.
Gloria Estefan burst into into public view in 1985 with "Conga" as the enigmatic front woman of Miami
Sound Machine. Ever since then, she has been in a state of perpetual, often radical creative evolution.
By 1980, Miami Sound Machine was in full swing, combining American pop with pure Afro-Cuban
rhythms, and winning raves from local clubgoers. The rest of the world joined the party in 1985, when
"Conga" exploded and elevated the band and Gloria to global prominence. The hits just kept coming: "1-2-
3, " "Don't Want To Lose You, " "Anything For You," "Cuts Both Ways, " "Get On Your Feet," "Coming Out Of
The Dark," and her version of "Turn The Beat Around" (1994) among numerous others. As she segued into
a solo recording career with Miami Sound Machine members continuing to contribute to her best-selling
albums Gloria became the only Latin artist to achieve major mainstream worldwide success. The achievement
of such a lofty position would prompt many performers to rest on their laurels. But Estefan chose to use her
stature to more thoroughly expose the treasured music of her homeland. The result was 1993's brilliant "mi
tierra", which explored classic Cuban music with a warmth and respect that could only come from one who
truly understood the depth of the genre. The disc went on to sell four million copies worldwide including
platinum sales in the US earning Gloria her first Grammy Award (for Best Latin Tropical Album). In Spain,
"mi tierra" became the best-selling album in the country ' s history, certified Ix platinum.
Her new DVD release "Everlasting Gloria " offers an incredible collection of videos encompassing the
years 1990 to 1995 with exclusive behind the scenes footage from the making of these videos. Material from
GLORIA'S GREATEST HITS album and her Grammy Award-winning tribute to her homeland "mi tierra"
are both showcased here, as well as two videos from her special holiday release, "Christmas Through Your
Eyes". Also extensively featured are videos from "Hold Me", "Thrill Me Kiss Me", Gloria's interpretations of
her pop and soul favorites. "I really think that any singer, from the time they start singing, is thinking of
some day recording their favorite song they've loved and come to identify with. That's a song you ' ll put a
lot of emotion into singing, " Gloria explains.
Gloria Estefan's lifelong dream has been to touch the lives of people in need in real and positive ways.
Inspired by this humanitarian vision, The Gloria Estefan Foundation aims to reach those who struggle
outside the safeguards of society by promoting good health, education and cultural development. The
Foundation was created to support charitable programs for disadvantaged children, to empower young
people through education and opportunity. Its mission includes funding annual scholarships for students
who need financial assistance, so that they may accomplish their highest educational goals.
As Estefan is a strong supporter of spinal cord research, the Foundation is committed to fostering
physical and emotional growth and strength. It is an open-door foundation accessible to individual cases of
hardship. With a broad view into the future, The Foundation's long-term goal is to thrive as the living,
breathing, lasting expression of Estefan's dream.
