Notes
Muhammad Ali
Thirty-nine years after he burst upon the scene as a gold-medal winner at the Rome
Olympics, Muhammad Ali remains a magical figure known and loved throughout the world.
His accomplishments in the ring were the stuff of legend: two fights with Sonny Liston, where
he proclaimed himself "The Greatest "-proving he was; three epic wars with Joe Frazier; the
stunning victory over George Foreman in Zaire; and dethroning Leon Spinks to become
heavyweight champion for an unprecedented third time.
Today, Muhammad Ali champions the causes of the developing world and, through Global
Village and other philanthropic groups, he has been instrumental in providing over 22 million
meals to the world's hungry. He has traveled across America and continents to hand-deliver food
and medical supplies to needy outlets such as: an embargoed Cuba; Harapan Kita Hospital for
Children in Jakarta, hldonesia; the street children of Morocco; Sister Beltran 's orphanage for
Liberian refugees in the Ivory Coast. He traveled to Iraq and secured the release of 15 U.S.
hostages, and, upon Nelson Mandela 's release, journeyed to South Africa on a benevolent
mission. Muhammad All has raised perhaps more money for more charities than any living
American. From the National Parkinson's Foundation to the Salvation Army to the Cerebral
Palsy Foundation, Muhammad generously lends his time and support. Through his book
HEALING, he teaches children the virtues of tolerance and understanding. Muhammad Ali has
received many awards, including Amnesty International's Lifetime Achievement Award and
citation as United Nations Messenger of Peace. No athlete has ever contributed more to the life
of his country, or the world, than Muhammad Ali-"Mr. International Friendship".
