With the help of 30,000 volunteers in 38 area programs across New York State, New York Special Olympics, Inc., provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for nearly 40,000 athletes aged 8-80. The goal of New York Special Olympics is to make athletic training and competition available to the more than 400,000 individuals with mental retardation and developmental disabilities living in the state. NYSO gives these individuals continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of skills and friendship with their families, Special Olympic athletes, and the community. Through their participation, athletes gain confidence and build a positive self-image which carries into the classroom, the home, the workplace and the community. Likewise, the thousands of volunteers develop friendships with athletes and other volunteers, and experience the joy of giving of themselves to benefit others. Special Olympics is a worldwide movement founded more than 30 years ago by Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Today more than one million athletes in 150 nations participate in certified Special Olympic Programs. In Special Olympics the emphasis is placed on what people can do rather on what they can't do, evident in the Special Olympics oath recited at every competition "Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.
