Rita Moreno is the only female performer to have won all four of the most
prestigious show business awards: The Oscar, the Emmy, the Tony and the Grammy.
Additionally she has received numerous other awards including The Golden Globe
Award, The Golden Apple Award, and the Joseph Jefferson Awards as Best Actress in
Chicago 's theatrical season in 1968 for her performance in "The Odd Couple". In
1995, Moreno received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Born in Alverio in Humacao, a small town near the famous rain forest of Puerto
Rico, Mareno moved to New York with her mother at the early age of 5. By the time
she was 19 she made her Broadway debut in "Skydrift " . By the age of 17 she had signed
a contract with MGM.
In her career, Mareno has made some thirty films and was often typecast as a
Mexican spitfire or an Indian maiden. Among her film credits are: "Untamed", "Seven
Cities of Gold", "The Lieutenant Wore Skirts ", "Garden of Evil", "Carnal Knowledge",
and "The Four Seasons " . She was also featured in the classic "The King and I" ,
however, it was her role in "West Side Story " which gained international acclaim and
from which she was recognized as a major talent.
In addition to her film, stage, television and concert careers, Moreno fills her
spare time by lecturing to various organizations as well as the university audiences.
Moreno has been an active supporter of Planned Parenthood for many years.
