Eterna KonTiki sports watches have their origin in a friendship between two men. Thor Heyerdahl, the Norwegian researcher and traveller was a friend of former Eterna boss Dr. Rudolf Schild-Comtesse. On his celebrated KonTiki expedition, Thor Heyerdahl wore a watch from his friend?s factory. That is why, ever since 1958, Eterna has been building sports watches under the name KonTiki. Notes

Eterna In 1856 , Dr. Josef Girard, a medical man, and Urs Schild, a teacher, founded the watchmaking business Dr. Girard & Schild in Grenchen. The very well-chosen brand name Eterna was taken over in 1906 as the company name. In 1995 Ferdinand A. Porsche became the proprietor of Eterna, ensuring that the company is one of the last remaining watchmakers in Switzerland that operate independently of any group. Since its foundation, Eterna has been responsible for numerous significant developments, which have left their mark on the watchmaking industry. At the regional exhibition in 1914, Eterna presented the first alarm wristwatch. Even today, the Rotor with ball bearings, launched by Eterna in 1948, is still a world standard of reference for self-winding watches. Judicious innovations to improve the quality and functioning of mechanical watches have remained the objective of the company. True to this tradition, in 2004 Eterna presented a world novelty: the first chronograph with mechanical, digital stop display, for the licensed brand Porsche Design Timepieces. At the Basle watch and jewellery fair in 2005, Eterna caused a sensation with the concept watch KonTiki Diver ? an unconventional diver?s watch.
