Notes

This watch, made in the Soviet Union, was worn on his flight to space by Cosmonaut Leonid Popov on Soyuz 35, from 9 April to I1 October 1980 and presented to Cosmonaut Romanenko on Salyut- 6. Romanenko returned to earth on Soynz 38, from 18 to 26 September the saute year, and brought flue watch back. This timepiece had been designed specifically for working under water and in outer space itt conjunction with high pressure spacesuits. The bulky test watch was evidently awkward to work with, lbr Romanenko states that " In the flights that followed, cosmonauts used the watch made by the Omega Company for working operations in the open void". Autograph document signed by Romanenko says : -file most unique pressure-tight electrical-mechanic wristwatch No 0(11 is made by Soviet specialists as a dedicated device for working operations under water and in the open space. The watch was used by the crew commander Popov Leonid, who, together with the flight engineer R}nunin Valeriy, was in space onboard SOYUZ-SALYUT6 complex from 4 September 1980 (start aboard SOYUZ-35) through 10 November the same year (landing aboard SOYUZ-37). In the flights which followed, cosmonauts used the watch made by OMEGA firm for working operations in the open void. My crew (call name TAYMYR), in which Ilse researcher-cosmonaut was Arnaldo Toiuayo-Mendez, a citizen of the Republic of Cuba, was launched aboard SOYUZ-38 on 18 September and on 19 September 1980 successfully permornted the clocking with SALYUT-6. I was very glad to meet with " Dnipers " (call sign of Popov I..1. and Ry min V.V.), particularly with Leonid Popov, as we were attested to tlhe cosmonauts cletachntent at the same time in 1970, together were undergoing the space pre-flight training and our families were good friends. I was also glad to visit SAIYU'1=6, where worked with the flight engineer Georgiy Grechko for 96 clays (start on 12 October 1977 aboard SOYUZ-26; landing on 16 March 1978 aboard SOYUZ- 27). On completion of the joint flight program, our Soviet-Cuban crew landed on 26 September 1980 aboard SOYUZ-38 in Kazakh steppe. Coming back with me was the present of my fellow Leonid Popov, the watch No 001, flown in space for 1(i0 clays. An item in my home museum, the watch would remind me of pure human friendship, which held people on the Earth and in space together " .
