Gille L'Aine a Paris, circa 1760. Very fine ormolu and porcelain cartel.

C. Shaped gilt-bronze with rocaille feet, crowned by a fine garland of Vincenne porcelain flowers, openwork gilt-brass decoration in a geometrical fleurette pattern below the dial and with scrolled foliage decoration on the side panels. D. White enamel with Roman numerals and outer Arabic minutes ring, gilt half-hour divisions. Gilt-brass Louis XV hands. M. Gilt brass with turned pillars, going barrel, verge escapement, short pendulum with silk suspension. Signed on the dial and back plate. Dim. 48 x 31 x 13 cm.

This clock is described and illustrated by jean Dominique Augarde, in Lrs 0/n11;cm du lidm/cs, Antiquorum Editions, Geneve 1996, fig 143, p. I 80. Pierre II Gille, called Gille I'Ain(' his, then Gille l'Aine, born in Paris in 1723 where he died on 5 March 1784. 1 ie was married to NIarie-Jeanne Cain called Eecain and was the father of Pierre- Noel. Received as Master on 18 November 1746, he was working rue Saint Martin in 1746, rue Saint Denis in 1751, rue aux Ours in 1765 and again rue Saint Martin in 1772. I-Ic (itst worked with his father who was called: Gille /Sl im; and then ran an independent workshop with the signat re: Gille t''Aim; /lls; at his father's death he returned to the name of Gille l'Aine.
